Lee Roy Selmon's history combines the benefits of football scholarships and volunteering for the community. First, the Selmon family. Lucious Selmon was the father of Jessie Selmon. They raised nine children on an Eufala farm. He played second in football and was the third brother who were players for Oklahoma. The three brothers were all All-Americans. Lucious Jr. Dewey, Lee Roy, and Lucious Jr. Dewey started the 1973 season. Lee Roy received the Outland and Lombardi Awards for being the most effective lineman in the United States. During his three-year tenure as the starting quarterback for Oklahoma, the Sooners went 32-1-1 and won two national titles. Selmon was honored when the National Football Foundation named him as a Scholar-Athlete three times time in 1975. Selmon graduated with a degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Fourth year of college Lee Roy devoted ten hours each week on volunteer work. After college he settled in Tampa playing nine years for the Buccaneers was the all-pro 3 times, and began a business career. He was hired in 1988 as an Account Representative for Tampa's First Florida Bank. He was also involved with these groups: Special Olympics Easter Seals Baptist Church Ronald McDonald House United Negro College Fund South Florida Institute Black Life Hall of Fame Bowl Committee. It's no wonder in 1982 the Junior Chamber of Commerce named him one of the nation's top 10 young males. When he was a student Lee Roy was 6-2 and was weighing 256 pounds. He was captain of his college team in 1975. In 1993, he was a part of the University of South Florida as associate director of athletics. In 1988, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He also made an appearance in the GTE Academic All-America Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 1995, the Oklahoma City Chapter National Football Foundation awarded an award of the Distinguished American Award for 1989 to Lucious Selmon Sr. Henry Bellmon is the Oklahoma governor who made this presentation.
